A contractor is feeling lonely, so he goes to the pet store to buy a talking parrot. The pet store owner agrees to sell the parrot to the contractor but gives him a warning, "This parrot talks but it also has the habit of saying bad words." The contractor smiles. He tells the pet store owner it's no problem. He doesn't like swearing but he knows how to fix the problem of a cussing bird. He takes the parrot home and everything is fine for the first few hours. (By: Tim Clark) If you're a contractor, let's face it... you're involved in sales. Sales activities are probably the part of the job you hate the most. Asking for referrals, contacting old clients, even cold calling neighborhoods is never fun to do. Of course, it's even harder to do while you're working. The economy is down but your phone might still be ringing. One of the biggest mistakes any contractor can make is to stop all sales activities while you've got a full slate of new clients. (By: Tim Clark) Many times, we hear certain phrases over and over and when we're pitching to a potential client, we tend to repeat the same cliches over and over. You may not even hear yourself doing it, but the client could be turned off and tune out your presentation. When it sounds like "sales-speak", you can lose the trust that your reputation as a service provider has earned. Here are some phrases to avoid when bidding on your next project:1- "What would you say if I told you..." or "How would you feel if I could get you..." - these types of sentences just scream salesman. "A young family moved into a house, next door to a vacant lot. One day a construction crew turned up to start building a house on the empty lot. The young family's 5-year-old daughter naturally took an interest in all the activity going on next door and spent much of each day observing the workers. Eventually the construction crew, all of them gems-in-the-rough, more or less adopted her as a kind of project mascot. They chatted with her, let her sit with them while they had coffee and lunch breaks, and gave her little jobs to do to make her feel important. At the end of the first week they even...
