When I attended the 60’s turn 50 panel discussion, there was one building that received plenty of attention – perhaps because it was the location of the discussion. I had always thought the Department of Water and Power was an ugly, geometric building, completely boring with no thought gone into the design. Apparently my untrained eye was completely off the mark. The DWP or the John Ferraro Building, located in downtown Los Angeles, is a marvel and far from thoughtless. With its glass wall façade allowing light from inside to light up the building – it resembled a la...
We all loved the Parisian Love, the Google Super Bowl Ad, and suddenly inspiration struck and we created a parody about Bob who needs help.. and a contractor... Enjoy! (Click the image to play) Watch it on YouTube!
As many of you are aware - from either listening to the national news coverage or because you live in California – this golden state has experienced some heavy rain lately! After a week of downpour, more than a couple homes could not stand the excess water or mudslides. My friend Robert’s duplex experienced the negative consequences of excess water last weekend (on top of a minor plumbing problem). Because he lives in an older, 1960's home divided into a duplex, there were some complicated electrical and plumbing issues. Years ago, a contractor separated the water pipes underneath ...
At the end of September 2009, I attended the Los Angeles Conservancy panel discussion entitled: “Challenges and Opportunities of Preserving ‘60s Architecture” – a kick off to their upcoming tribute to the half a century old and diverse buildings surrounding LA. The significance of this golden age is that once a building “turns” 50, it falls within the National Register of Historic Places general guideline that buildings must be at least fifty before becoming landmarks or historic. This new decade will make it easier to build a case to preserve and restore bo...
Why get a security system installed? It's a new year - begin it with providing your family a sense of safety. Security systems are triggered when a door or window is opened; window glass is broken or even when motion is detected. They can even be used as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors complete with panic buttons. When the system is triggered, it notifies the private central office of a fire or burglary on your property automatically dials 911, and/or simply rings an alarm. Often the system can be set up to call your cell phone as well, valuable for out of town situations. What do Securi...
JUST AN FYI THAT MAY SAVE A LIFE... For Blood Clots and Strokes - There is Now a Fourth Indicator: the Tongue STROKE IDENTIFICATION: During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics). She said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PM Jane passed ...
In case you missed the President's speech on Tuesday at a Virgina Home Depot, there should soon be a new program that sounds very similar to "Cash for Clunkers" stimulus plan. Right now discussions are taking place to create a nationwide, residential energy efficiency retrofit program called HOME STAR or "Cash for Caulkers." Part of the inspiration behind the creation of Cash for Caulkers are two simple facts: 17% of construction workers are unemployed and over 20% of US carbon emissions come from residential buildings. The program aims at solving both problems with $23 billion in incentives f...

We are excited to announce our winners from our contractor blog contest. After much deliberating we have picked our top blog posts. The Grand prize of $250 Gift Card to Home Depot goes to … (drum roll) ... Tony Parkins for his post: To Reface or Not to Reface your Kitchen Cabinets. Tony’s post about when to reface cabinets was easy to read because of a strong structure and well-crafted sentences, easy to understand from an uneducated homeowner stand point, and contained quality pictures to make his points stand out. He covers both sides of the topic with plenty of real examples an...
In order to truly understand your home’s energy needs and how to implement energy saving systems, it is important to have a home energy auditor examine your house first to understand how much energy your house consumes and to evaluate the best way to make it more efficient. As you begin to select what energy systems to implement, the costs may seem daunting but the money saved in the long run is huge, the energy saved is even greater and the government offers many tax breaks and other incentives to make turning your home into a less burdensome and greener, efficient place. What is a Ho...

It’s that time of year; fresh flowers, new dresses, and of course... spring cleaning! For those of us who are willing to do a little more than just straighten the house or wash the windows, it's probably time to repaint some rooms to both brighten and freshen the house.Repainting even just one room of the house can help change your perspective of space and flow especially when you cannot stand the bland, white bathroom or the bright red dining room. The big question is which color?Hot Trends in Home Interior ColorThe good news about paint color trends is that they tend to survive the decad...
