There are two main types of cabinets: face-frame cabinets and frameless cabinets. Semi-Custom cabinetry is comprised of some stock cabinets and some custom cabinets designed to fit in an unusual space or designed to the homeowner specifications. There is a larger range of choices in size, materials, colors, and types of wood. They cost more for fabrication and installation than stock cabinets.

Custom cabinets are fabricated exactly to the homeowners' wishes and can be made to fit exactly into any type of kitchen or bathroom space. Custom cabinetry costs considerably more than stock or semi-custom.

Total costs for kitchen cabinets or bathroom cabinets depend on the style, type of wood, and how custom they are, but the total linear feet of cabinets is what costs the most. Cabinets and installation usually start at around $5,000 for a typical ten foot by twelve foot kitchen, for example, and go up from there. Costs can run up to $50,000 for custom made luxury cabinetry and sometimes more. On average, quality cabinets in the kitchen will cost between $10,000 and $15,000. You'll most likely also be making your countertop purchase at this time, so you'll need to factor that into the budget as well.
