Cabinets are the heart and soul of any kitchen or bathroom. Cabinets make the statement and define the style of a room. The choice of the correct type of cabinet can make or break bathroom remodeling or kitchen renovation projects. Quality cabinets are usually the most expensive part of any remodeling project.

There are two main types of cabinets: face-frame cabinets and frameless cabinets. Face-frame cabinets have a wood face around the cabinet and the doors are attached, with hinges, directly to that frame. This is the traditional type of cabinet that has been decorating our kitchens and bathrooms for decades. The frameless cabinet is more modern, where there is no frame in front and the cabinet door is attached by a longer hinge to the inside of the cabinet wall.

Custom, Semi-Custom, and Stock Cabinets

Homeowners can choose from a variety of cabinet materials (wood, metal, glass, etc.) and styles of doors, drawers, and cabinet hardware. Another choice a homeowner must make is the cabinet fabrication: custom cabinets, semi-custom cabinets or stock cabinets.

Stock cabinets are purchased and installed exactly as they were made. There is a limited selection in sizes, colors, styles and materials.

Semi-Custom cabinetry is comprised of some stock cabinets and some custom cabinets designed to fit in an unusual space or designed to the homeowner specifications. There is a larger range of choices in size, materials, colors, and types of wood. They cost more for fabrication and installation than stock cabinets.

Custom cabinets are fabricated exactly to the homeowners' wishes and can be made to fit exactly into any type of kitchen or bathroom space. Custom cabinetry costs considerably more than stock or semi-custom.

Kitchen Cabinet Pricing & Installation Cost

Total costs for kitchen cabinets or bathroom cabinets depend on the style, type of wood, and how custom they are, but the total linear feet of cabinets is what costs the most. Cabinets and installation usually start at around $5,000 for a typical ten foot by twelve foot kitchen, for example, and go up from there. Costs can run up to $50,000 for custom made luxury cabinetry and sometimes more. On average, quality cabinets in the kitchen will cost between $10,000 and $15,000. You'll most likely also be making your countertop purchase at this time, so you'll need to factor that into the budget as well.
