Refinishing Hardwood Floors

The great thing about having hardwood floors in your home is that they can be brought back to life after years of service. Carpeting, linoleum, natural stone - they all need to be replaced if there are rips and tears, stains, chips and gouges.

Replacing these other products can be expensive and it's not environmentally friendly, either. But wood flooring is different. Just about every type of hardwood floor can be resurfaced to remove just about any deep scratch or surface stains.

First, it's important to make sure that you really do have a hardwood floor. An engineered or veneer surface wood floor may be too thin to resurface as they usually have about an 1/8" surface of wood on top of particle boards. Check a small section, near a furnace grate or by pulling up the edging near a door.

Next, you need to consider whether you'll do this project yourself or hire a floor refinisher to resurface the wood for you. You'll need to clear and prep the room, remove exposed nails or carpet tacks, and rent a sanding machine, an edging sander, and a floor buffer. The project should take you one to three days, depending on the size and complexity of the room.

Finally, you'll need to choose the type of finish you want on your new floors. You can go with either a water-based polyurethane or an oil-based product.

Water-based Polyurethane:

Oil-based Polyurethane:

So, if you've got quality hardwoods under your carpet or need to refresh the look of your wood floor, consider resurfacing instead of replacing. And, if you don't want to do the project yourself, you can find quality resurfacing companies with us, at ConstructionDeal.com. We've got a network of flooring contractors who will bid on your job. It's a fast, free and easy way to find a pro!

Cork Flooring

Cork floors has been catching on lately because it's extremely durable and, similar to bamboo flooring, is a renewable resource. It's the same substance used with wine bottles.

Cork, as a flooring material, has been around for a long time. It's made from the bark of a cork oak tree but it's taken from the tree after a reasonable growth period, so the tree is not destroyed in the process.

Advantages of Cork Flooring

Durability - the cork material is very flexible, and the honeycomb design allows it to expand and move instead of being affected by friction. Many cork floor applications can last as long as the house.

Easy Application - cork can be installed easily in nearly any room in the house. It can be layed over existing flooring, and can even be installed as tiles that click together instead of gluing or nailing them down.

Natural Looks - cork flooring comes in a variety of colors, stains, and designs and can fit in with almost any room style.

Sealed Tight - the cork cellular structure will not rot, resists moisture, and repels insects (such as termites) and germs. It's a great material for the kitchen! Obviously, you could even spill wine on it and it would clean right up.

Inexpensive - a complete cork floor installed in the kitchen can cost up to half of a hardwood floor installation and even more over natural stone flooring.

Acoustics - unlike hardwood, stone, or tile, the cork floor will reduce excessive sound in a room.

Insulation - cork acts as an excellent barrier to heat and cold. The cork floor would be much warmer on bare feet in the cold winter months.

If you'd like to find a local flooring company to consult on a Cork Floor installation, consider ConstructionDeal.com. We've got a complete nationwide network of floor companies that could help you improve your home flooring. And it's a free service to all our homeowners!
