Hardwood Flooring Installation Tip

If you're going to have hardwood floors installed in your home, here is something to keep in mind. Many people would love to have the wood arrive and have an installation company show up the same day to put the flooring down.

However, it's very important to let the hardwood floor acclimate to the temperature and humidity levels in your home.

Once the wood flooring arrives, let it stand -- in the room you're going to install it -- for at least three to five days. Keep the room at a normal living temperature, usually between 65 and 75 degrees and close to 35% to 40% humidity. Also, if you can, turn your heating and cooling fan on or bring a circulating fan into the room to keep a constant circulation of air throughout that room.

Doing this is the best way to make sure that once your hardwood floor is installed that it has expanded or shrunk to it's normal size after shipping. It's the way to make sure there are no seams, cracks, cupping or noise issues once the floor is installed.

A New Look at Laminate

Tell people you're installing a laminate floor in your home and many might actually turn up their nose. While there's definitely a stigma attached to laminate flooring, most don't realize that there are some really great options out there in laminates that are not only durable but good looking.

A laminate floor can be the perfect choice for a heavily-trafficked area or in homes with kids and pets. But it goes beyond being able to stand up to a lot of wear and tear. Laminates can have a look of real wood, with wood grains on the surface, or even the look of a natural stone.

Advantages of Laminate Flooring
There are some disadvantages to laminates but, as with any flooring material option, it depends on the situation and the application. For example, you don't want to install a laminate in the bathroom or any "wet" household area. The surface resists water, but it's not good to get water around the edging of the laminate where it can get under the surface and cause problems.

In the past, many have complained of a hollow knock or tapping sound when they walk on their laminate flooring. Today, the problem has been solved by adding an insulation barrier under the laminate to prevent this. It can be similar to adding a pad under a carpet. Cork padding usually works best to help eliminate any noise problems.

If you're looking to install a laminate floor in your home, post your project with ConstructionDeal.com. We'll match you to local Flooring Contractors to help with the installation. It's free to use the service and you'll save time and money in the process.

Types of Hardwood Floors

Everyone wants the hardwood floors. They've always been popular for the natural beauty and durability, but the hardwood flooring craze has been going strong for 20 years now.

If you're in the process of building a new home or remodeling your old home, you'll want to consider a variety of wood choices. Not every wood is a suitable choice for every home - just like a granite countertop is not right for every single kitchen. You'll want to look at the hardness, color variations, durability, and ability to handle moisture and humidity for your climate.

Darker floors can really highlight lighter walls and trim and even furniture but they can make a room look smaller. Also, dark woods may show uneven wear faster than lighter colors. Lighter woods can open up a room and give it a lighter airy feel and can make a small room seem bigger.

Darker colors are for more formal rooms, like a living or dining room. A lighter wood has a more casual or comfortable tone to it and is perfect for the kitchen and family room.

Types of Hardwood Floors:
  • Mahogany
  • Cherry
  • Pine
  • Oak, White and Red
  • Beech
  • White Ash
  • Maple
  • Birch
  • Douglas Fir
  • Hickory
  • Pecan
  • Cypress
There are a host of other natural hardwoods, but these are the most common. They have varying degrees of hardness, color ranges, and moisture stabilities. Check with your local flooring contractor to decide which is best for you, your house, and floor traffic that it will have to handle.

Radiant Heating for your Floors

If you're having your flooring replaced, it might be a good idea to consider installing a radiant heat system at the same time.

You've probably heard the term before but might not know what it's all about. Radiant heat is applying a heat source directly to the floor of your house. This source disperses heat directly from the surface and radiates it around the room in an even fashion.

Radiant heating has some great advantages:
Radiant flooring heat can be generated by several methods - gas/electric, wood burning, solar, and more. There are 2 types of residential radiant flooring systems:

Hydronic Radiant: this is the most popular radiant flooring option. Heated water is pumped from the heating unit through tubes under the flooring surface. The temperature can be controlled through zoning sections, along with a system of pumps and thermostats, to keep colder rooms warmer and warmer rooms cooler.

Electric
Radiant: this method is not nearly as efficient as hydronic heating because of the higher cost of electricity. Electrical cables are installed onto the subfloor, underneath the hardwood flooring or tile flooring. Electric radiant works best when it can be used during off-peak hours to save money. The best way to do this is to have a concrete floor which can hold onto the heat for up to 8 hours at a time - which keeps you from running the electricity during those peak hours.

If you're looking to re-do your flooring, talk to radiant heat flooring contractor about adding a radiant heat system at the same time. There are many "dry" installation methods that do not require excessive construction to install the systems. Know your options and discuss the whether your choice of flooring material works with a radiant heating plan.

And, if you need radiant flooring heat - we're here to help - ConstructionDeal.com will match you to floor heating installers at no charge. You'll have several companies calling you instead of you trying to call them at random, and that saves you time.

You'll also have several bids to do the work and you choose the best installation price - that saves you money. What more could you ask for?
